A canoe is a small and lightweight boat that is pointed at
both ends and propelled with paddles. The number of paddles
and paddlers depends on the size of canoe. The paddlers
either can sit on supports or kneeling on the frame of
canoes. These canoes are used for various types of
activities such as birding, fishing, photography, camping
and river rafting. There are mainly three types of canoes:
Recreational canoes - These canoes are made for flat water
paddling. Because of their stable design they are fun and
easy to paddle. These boats are used for various activities
such as fishing, birding or photography.
Versatile canoes- This type of canoe is designed for use in
calm lakes as well as whitewater. They have great
maneuverability and are larger than recreational canoes.
Versatile canoes are perfect for canoe camping trips.
There are different kinds of styles of canoes. The
materials they are made of are of different quality. One
chooses one type of canoe or another depending on what
one wants to do with it. They are mainly made of four
different materials.
Canoes come in many types and styles. They are also
constructed from many different materials. They type of
canoe a person chooses depends on what he wants to do
with the canoe. Canoes are constructed with four different
materials. Wood, aluminum, plastic and fiber. Some
materials are better than others depending on what the
canoe will be used for. What the canoe is built out of
effects its toughness, performance, weight and price.
Wood canoes
Traditionally canoes were designed and made up of wood such
as birchbark, dugout, cedar-plank sided, or any other type
of wood. There are several types of wood canoes but primary
and common ones are cedar strip and wood canvas. These
cedar strip canoes are made out of edge glued strips of
cedar wood and wood canvas hulls have a wood frame which is
skinned with painted canvas. Wood allows making very
complex hull shapes and because of their unique shape they
deliver enhanced performance. Their weight is however, not
ideal like that of modern canoes and they require more care
and maintenance than modern canoes.
Aluminum canoes
These canoes are cheap and inexpensive due to the low cost
of aluminum. These canoes are a bit heavy however and
their ends cannot be streamlined. Aluminum canoes also
get stuck on rocks alot and get dents. Once an Aluminum
canoe is dented its there forever. Aluminum canoes also
need maintenance and care.
Plastic canoes
Plastic canoes are more slippery than the aluminum canoes
but they are not very stiff as compared to other materials.
It means they are not able to hold complex shapes, nor they
can be formed into fine entry lines. It has certain design
limits too. Plastic can not be molded to make complex
shapes and their fine streamlined entry line cannot be made
out of plastic. This reduces their efficiency at higher
speed in comparison to wood and fiberglass canoes.
Fiber Canoes
These canoes are very strong and resistant to damage from
rocks and extreme temperatures. Fiber canoes are also easy
to repair when they do get damaged. They are a perfect
choice for rough whitewater rafting and require very little
maintenance.
